The Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica is an archaeological site based around the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ostia, formerly a port and trading hub. It's known for the excellent preservation of its buildings, many of which contain stunning frescoes and mosaics. The history of the site dates back as early as the 4th century BC, while the oldest buildings on display – including the former military camp – date back to the 3rd century BC. Ostia was the site of a furious battle during Sulla's civil war, sacked by pirates in 68 BC, and underwent renovations and improvements under Roman leaders including Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Claudius, and Trajan. It's a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in Ancient Roman life.
